John Mauro Named City Manager for Bainbridge Island

The Bainbridge Island City Council approved an employment agreement with John Mauro as the next City Manager on July 14, 2026. Mauro signed the contract on July 17 and begins serving Bainbridge Island on September 8, 2026.

Recruitment began in December 2025 after previous City Manager Blair King announced his retirement. The council retained executive recruitment firm Raftelis for a national search. The position was posted in April 2026, attracting 33 national applicants.

After review, the Council narrowed the field to two finalists. Finalists interviewed with the City Council, City leadership, community partners, and advisory group representatives. A public meet-and-greet was also held. Following interviews, the Council directed Raftelis to negotiate with Mauro.

"John brings a strong commitment to public service and extensive experience," said Mayor Clarence Moriwaki. "Throughout the recruitment process, he demonstrated a genuine appreciation for Bainbridge Island's unique character and community values. We are excited to welcome him to Bainbridge Island and look forward to working together to serve our residents.".

Mauro has served as City Manager in Port Townsend since 2019. His fifteen-year local government career includes experience in public administration, financial management, capital project delivery, and community engagement.

Mauro succeeds Interim City Manager Ellen Schroer, who served in the role since March 2026. The City Council appreciated Schroer's leadership and service during the transition.
