Amii Thompson's Contract Approved, BIESPA Agreement Ratified

On Wednesday, June 25, the Bainbridge Island School District board approved a new three-year contract for Superintendent Amii Thompson and ratified the Bainbridge Island Educational Support Professional Association (BIESPA) Collective Bargaining Agreement for 2026-2027. Superintendent Thompson's contract runs from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029.

The one-year BIESPA agreement, ratified by 78% of its participating membership on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, is effective September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2027. It includes a 2.6% compensation increase based on the Implicit Price Deflator (IPD). Changes include updated classification titles for Nutrition Services, Office and Administrative Support, and Transportation Dispatcher and Driver Professionals. The agreement also expands reimbursements for required examinations and licenses for some roles and clarifies wage procedures for employees substituting in different classifications. Dane Fenwick, Director of Facilities, Operations, and Capital Projects, said in his memo, "I request Board approval of the amended Bainbridge Island School District / Bainbridge Island Educational Support Professional Association 2026 - 2027 Collective Bargaining Agreement".

Also, Mr. Fenwick presented the Capital Projects Monthly Report for May 2026. Work on the Woodward Middle School track resurfacing project, by Beynon Sports LLC, begins July 14, 2026, after the Rotary Auction. District-wide LED Retrofit Projects, with contractors Johnson Electric and D&S Electrical, began June 22, 2026. Apollo Mechanical Solutions Group is staging materials for HVAC upgrades at Woodward Middle School, with installation starting July 13, 2026. Nelson Construction Inc. began the Waterless Urinal Replacement Project in the BHS 200 Building on June 22, 2026.

Chief Financial Officer Kim Knight presented the preliminary financial report for May 2026: revenues of $4,157,267.10 and expenditures of $5,027,553.53. Year-to-date revenues totaled $51,051,430.78, with expenditures at $46,672,971.13. The district reported $4,633,115.52 in unencumbered spending capacity. The ending fund balance in the General Fund as of May 2026 was $5,630,601.

The board also approved donations: $10,168.30 from the Sakai PTO and $3,829.00 from the Seattle Mariners to Sakai Intermediate School for supplies and its choir program. Bainbridge High School received $1,000.00 for the Liz Orr Scholarship Fund from the Bainbridge Schools Foundation, and $15,000.00 for a post-secondary scholarship from The Troy and Baden Biddle Foundation. Public Records Officer Angela Sawyer updated the board on public records requests, and Superintendent Thompson outlined the 2025-26 Superintendent Evaluation categories, feedback, and scores from a Special Session on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
